About the Artists

Susan CowanSusan Cowan has been a professional artist since the late 70's and has been an adjunct faculty member of Clark College in Vancouver, WA since 1986 teaching watercolor and mixed media for their Mature Learning Department. Her work has won many awards over the years and has earned her signature status in both the Northwest Watercolor Society and the Red River Watercolor Society. She splits her time between her home in Portland, OR, and her studio in Tacoma, WA. In 1995 she began co-leading Art Adventures with fellow painter and teacher, Lee Baughman. Love of travel and painting have led them to design Watercolor and Water-media Workshops & Get-Aways for artists and art lovers.

Susan, now in her 60's, loves the influence travel has had on her spirit and work. "I am so grateful to have been able to live my life as an artist, sharing what I can with my fellow artists/students. Traveling and painting have turned out to be incredible ways to experience the world. My students have taught me to do what I can, when I can...I know that each day is precious."

Susan's work can be seen at the Rental Sales Gallery of the Portland Art Museum, and Gumbo on Mississippi in Portland, OR. She also participates in Regional Exhibitions.

Lee BaughmanLee Baughman became a full time artist and teacher after retiring from a twenty years career as a professional pinstriper doing hand painted striping on cars and trucks. As a watermedia painter he explores the limitless possibilities of watercolor and acrylic painting. His paintings reflect his interest in exploring the creative process. Clues to the artist’s personality and interest are scattered throughout his work. "I paint the things I enjoy having in my life and that I want to put into the world", he says. Lee’s love of color and design is evident as he interacts with the landscape of the Northwest as well as images from Italy, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, and Alaska where he has led art-adventures with his teaching partner Susan Cowan.

As a teacher Lee is positive and enthusiastic. While skilled in teaching fundamentals and techniques, he often refers to himself as a coach. "My job is not to create 'clones' of myself but rather to support individual artist in expressing their own uniqueness" he says, "it is a continual feast to see the world through their eyes!"

Lee Baughman has 16 years of teaching experience at Clark College where he facilitates art classes as an adjunct faculty member. Additionally he leads numerous workshops and art trips every year. He is a past president of the Southwest Washington Watercolor Society. He considers it a privilege to have had his work collected by so many individuals and companies over his career.
