Water Media Art Workshops
Susan Cowan and Lee Baughman, both award winning watermedia painters and popular teachers from the Portland, OR / Vancouver, WA area, teamed up in 1995 to take artists on painting adventures around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Since forming www.art-adventures.com they have led painting Workshops on cruises up the Inside Passage of Alaska, paint-outs on the Oregon Coast, painted in the snow on the shores of Lake Louise, returned 6 years to Molokai, HI for inspirational painting retreats at Hui Ho'olana, guided groups for 6 years on painting tours of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, painted the Mardi Gras floats and music scene of New Orleans, and have taken groups back to Kauai, Hawaii 7 years to the peaceful Kauai Retreat Center for Aqueous Media Intensives.
Venice, Italy in 2004 was their first tour across the big water and in 2008 they co-led an amazing tour to Poland with the help of Lloyd and Ulrike Halverson, and as well as their annual Getaways to Friday Harbor, WA. In 2009 they had an incredible two-week Watercolor Workshop based in Limoux, France at Montfaucon with Susan and Lee, preceded by a one week Getaway, Photography for the Artist with Susan and guest leader Sharika Roland, at Haut Baran in Puy L Eveque, France.
2011 featured a return to Limoux, France and Montfaucon (www.montfaucontours.com) with 2 fabulous groups of painters (click on our link of photos of this trip through our Flickr photostream), and a mellow Painting Getaway to Friday Harbor, WA, where beautiful paintings were begun and amazing photographs recorded the wildlife of this special island.
Both tours to Tuscany (www.abbondanzatoscana.com) were FULL for 2012 and just delightful under the care of Paula Sullivan and her terrific crew of chefs and drivers. 2013 found them returning to the Kauai Retreat Center for an Aqueous Media Intensive during Spring Break, followed by a return to their beloved Montfaucon in Limoux, France for another 14 days of Plein-air painting, gourmet eating and photographing the sites!
Spring of 2014 saw a return to the Kauai Retreat Center on the island of Kauai, HI and our Annual Fall Painting Getaway in Friday Harbor, October 2014, was delightful as a full house painted up a storm at the Grange and enjoyed communal meals prepared by our Food Pods Extraordinaire! Our return to Montfaucon in Limoux, France in September of 2015 reunited several of our artists with their favorite French "Home" and introduced artists from across the country to the beauty and warmth that brings us back so often! We have already booked a very special Plein Air Tour there with Early Bird Pricing for September of 2017! Our Annual Fall Painting Getaway to Friday Harbor in the beautiful San Juan Islands was filled with warmth, friendship and creativity in October of 2015 and we are happy to be announcing our newest dates and plans for 2 upcoming events in Friday Harbor in 2016!Students get twice the attention and input from these two veteran teachers who compliment each other with their love of painting, passion for travel, and nurturing of fellow artists. Water Media Workshops are about what you would pay for one instructor and Self Directed Painting Getaways are structured to be as affordable as possible, with Susan and Lee organizing and securing locations/accommodation and joining the group as painting participants, leading the group in daily critiques and touring/travel advice. The two options are ideal: Watermedia Workshops for those who want to learn new techniques and gain a better knowledge of both watercolor and/or acrylics from 2 great instructors or the Self Directed Painting Getaways for those seasoned painters who just want to travel with the camaraderie of fellow artists and not pay workshop prices to do it!
